Best CBD oils for 2020
Kanibi Organic Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Ingredients: Medium chain triglycerides (derived from coconuts), natural flavors, hemp-derived CBD extract, natural sweetener (MCT oil, stevia).
Testing notes: Yellowish, opaque color. Smell faithful to the selected flavor. Viscous texture.
The chemists and growers at Kanibi are obsessed with perfection, making them the gold standard for CBD oils. Not only are their methods clean and thorough, but Kanibi goes the extra mile. Each batch of their carefully curated products is double-tested by a third party. The testing notes are published on their website, so you know exactly what you’re buying.
Kanibi sources their oils from organically grown Kentucky hemp. Every bottle contains 0–0.3% THC. This oil is full-spectrum, which means it contains all the cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant in nature. This creates a higher quality product that maximizes the entourage effect. Available in five flavors.
Advantages:
- Varied selection
- Above-standard testing
- Good customer service
Disadvantages:
- High pricing
- Strict return policy
Populum Full-Spectrum Hemp CBD Oil
Ingredients: Grapeseed oil, hemp seed oil, virgin coconut oil, cold-pressed orange oil, stevia extract, full-spectrum hemp extract.
Testing notes: Light, clear gold. Smells like fresh oranges. Natural, citrusy flavor.
As pioneers of the full spectrum extract—which believes the benefits of the whole plant is greater than its individual parts—Populum remains one of its top exemplars. Their CBD oil is a highly purified cocktail rich in cannabinoids, terpenes, and antioxidants. All ingredients are natural and non-GMO.
Populum is committed to eliminating the stigma of using CBD oil. To that end, they offer a generous 30-day risk-free trial, which begins the day you receive your package. Unsatisfied? Get in touch with their customer care team to start the return process. They include extensive resources on how to get the most benefits per bottle, making them an excellent choice for first-time users.
Advantages:
- Delicious, citrusy taste
- High-quality ingredients
- Good customer service
Disadvantages:
- Limited selection
- Gelatin capsules (non-vegan)
Joy Organics CBD Oil Tincture
Ingredients: (Unflavored) Organic extra-virgin olive oil, phytocannabinoid-rich hemp extract.
Testing notes: Fast-acting. Viscous and dark in appearance. Flavor conforms to selection.
Joy Organics is a special case in at least two respects: First, it is one of the few (but proud) CBD oil manufacturers to offer an unflavored tincture. Second, it is one of a mere handful to promise 0% THC. Most distributors—even major ones like Populum—can promise only that each bottle contains less than 0.3% THC.
Both CBD and THC are natural compounds found in hemp. THC is the main psychoactive compound in marijuana responsible for the “high” sensation. While the ratio of THC in hemp and CBD oil is too small to create concern, its total absence better brings out the rejuvenating effects of CBD. Each bottle of Joy Organics contains about 30 servings.
Advantages:
- Varied selection
- Extremely pure
- Money back guarantee
Disadvantages:
- A bit pricey
- Gelatin capsules (non-vegan)
- No international shipping
NuLeaf Naturals CBD Oil
Ingredients: (Unflavored) USDA-certified organic hemp oil, full spectrum hemp extract.
Testing notes: Fast-acting. Clear greenish gold. Piney citrus aroma. Distinctively “hempy” with earth, pepper, and pine notes.
The appeal of concentration is clear: The higher the concentration, the more powerful the oil’s effect. Concentration is measured in milligrams, and the average CBD oil has a concentration ranging from 250 to 1,500 milligrams. For NuLeaf, their products range from 240 to 4,850 milligrams! That might be the most CBD-rich tincture on the market.
NuLeaf has one goal: to create a simple and effective product. They don’t dally with complicated features like flavor. Their oil is all-natural with no additives or preservatives, and their hemp is grown organically in Colorado. Every product is tested by a third party, and they produce oil in its purest and most simple form—and they like it that way!
Advantages:
- Extremely pure
- High CBD concentration
- Free shipping
Disadvantages:
- Pricey
- Limited selection
- No international shipping
FAB CBD Oil
Ingredients: Organically grown hemp extract, full-spectrum cannabinoid blend, flavoring from natural sources, terpenes, medium chain triglycerides (may contain trace amounts of hemp derived THC <0.3%).
Testing notes: (Unflavored) Clear green-gold. Mild flavor. Pine and citrus notes lend a pleasant bitterness.
FAB is a reader favorite at CBD Hacker. Part of their appeal is the delicious and wholesome taste. Each tincture comes in at least three strengths (300, 600, or 1200 milligrams) and five flavors (citrus, mint, natural, berry, and vanilla). The flavoring is made from all-natural and high-quality ingredients. This makes FAB a great choice for first-time users of CBD oil, as well as children.
FAB also recently lowered their prices in the last year. Now their products can be enjoyed more by more people.
FAB products are tested by Pro Verde Laboratories. This analytical testing service uses the latest technology in testing equipment and methodologies.
Advantages:
- Delicious taste
- High-quality ingredients
- Responsive customer service
Disadvantages:
- Test results unpublished
- Little company transparency
- No international shipping

Ingredients: Fractionated coconut oil, organic mint chocolate flavor oil (organic sunflower oil, natural flavors), hemp extract
Tasting Notes: Clear, gold liquid. Mint is the dominant flavor, with a subtle hint of chocolate.
Full spectrum, ethanol and CO2 extraction
Charlotte’s Web is likely the CBD company with the most widespread brand-name recognition. That’s because they are one of the oldest and most trusted CBD brands around, and they’ve received extensive media coverage in the last few years.
In the past, we were concerned that their labeling made it hard to understand how much CBD was in each product. Since then, Charlotte’s Web has made their packaging more informative, and added information about CBD potency to their website’s product descriptions.
Like many leading brands, Charlotte’s Web offers a database of third-party lab results for each batch of each product. You will need a batch number to look up results, though.
Advantages
- Seed-to-sale control over product
- Long-established, trusted brand
- Great website experience
Disadvantages

- Difficult to find some product information
- You need a batch number to access the lab result database

Our Methodology
So, what sets this ranking apart from all of the other CBD oil reviews out there?
Well, our rigorous testing process is designed to make our rankings as fair and unbiased as possible. Here’s how it works:
We selected a mix of established brands and rising stars to evaluate for this ranking. To do that, we looked at the products CBD users are recommending in online communities, and which brands are generating buzz in the industry. We also included companies that had previously reached out to us, asking to be evaluated.
In the end, we whittled down a starting list of 60 companies, and ended up fully evaluating about 35 different samples. Then, we scored each one in these five main categories:
- Product quality and value
- User experience
- Customer service
- Reputation
- Transparency and accuracy
Best CBD Brands
Looking for different types of CBD products?
Browse our rankings of the best products in each category. We’ve fully vetted each brand for quality:
We want to make sure that our CBD oil reviews are as relevant as possible, for as many different people as possible. That’s why we incorporated feedback from our readers into our scoring metrics this year.
Product Quality and Value
As always, the product category carried the greatest weight in our final scores. That’s because it included some of the most important questions for consumers:
- Quality: What are the ingredients in this oil? What extraction methods did they use?
- Sourcing: Where does the hemp come from? Was it grown organically to ensure that it is free of pesticides and heavy metals?
- Value: What is the price per milligram of CBD?
- Flavor: Can I stand to take this regularly?
It was important to us to eliminate bias as much as possible, so we used a blind testing process to evaluate the products for taste, aroma, texture, and appearance. Every sample was decanted into an identical container labeled only by number.
We’ve also updated the way we award points for flavor in this ranking, to account for the increased bitterness that is typical of higher-potency full spectrum products.
User Experience
A company could be offering the best product out there. But if the webstore crashes every time you try to make a purchase, then it doesn’t do you any good. That’s why we closely evaluated each company’s website for performance, design, and accessibility.
We also checked to see how easy it is to find important information, from shipping and return policies to the ingredient lists for each product.
Customer Service
We only want to recommend companies that stand by their customers. If you have a question or a problem with your CBD product, you should be able to count on quick, friendly, and knowledgeable customer care.
In addition to using secret-shopper-style research to see how each company’s customer service measured up, we also checked to see how consumer-friendly their policies are. For example, we looked at:
- Shipping policies
- Return policies and satisfaction guarantees
- Assistance programs
- Loyalty or rewards programs
Among the top brands, the quality of their customer service was often the deciding factor that determined a higher score.
Reputation
For the reputation category, we looked at each company’s track record. We scoured the web for reviews to see what customers have been saying over time.
We also looked for any red flags, like negative media coverage or patterns in customer complaints.
Finally, we investigated how each company interacts with customers. Do they respond professionally to critical reviews?
Transparency and accuracy
Finally, in an industry that essentially regulates itself, transparency is massively important to building trust for consumers. For this category, we looked at the types of information that each company was willing to share. For example, we asked:
- Can you see who owns or manages the company?
- Is the company forthcoming about where the hemp comes from?
- How much will they share about their manufacturing methods they use?
- Do they post up-to-date third-party lab results?
- What kinds of things do they test for?
Most importantly, we sent samples of each product to a third-party lab for CBD and THC potency tests. While some variation is to be expected, no products that tested more than 10 percent below the advertised amount of CBD are included in this ranking.
We compared our lab’s analysis to the CBD quantity listed on each product’s label. And where companies made their own lab testing public, we looked at how extensive, up-to-date, and easy-to-find their lab results were.
Value: CBD Oil Price Comparison
We know that the cost of CBD oil is a major concern for most consumers. But it’s not easy to do a side-by-side comparison of the real value of the top brands. That’s because the varied potencies and bottle sizes of different products mean that the price tag isn’t necessarily the best indication of the value you’re getting.
To help you find the best CBD oil values, this table that compares the cost per milligram of CBD in each product, so that you’ll know exactly what you’re paying for your CBD.
